It’s been a minute since I’ve posted on here but life has been busy!
In the last year I drew my first DC Comics series, Aquaman: Yo-Ho-Hold Onto Your Hook, where I served as lead designer and penciller/inker for many episodes. What a dream come true!
Written by Josh Trujillo and edited by Michael McCalister, with art by myself, Bradley Clayton and Niky Ielapi, this series is a sweeping tour of a pirate DC universe, where we meet analogues of so many characters I’ve been hyped to draw — Superman, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Teen Titans, and more. Here’s a gallery of some of the work I did there:
My favorite part of the project was drawing a time-travel episode towards the end where we met several versions of the orignal Aquaman, all drawn in a different style! I got to pay tribute to so many brilliant Aquaman artists that have gone before me, from Nick Cardy to Alex Ross and the late Butch Guice. It was especially moving to pay tribute to the great Ramona Fradon. Here’s a small sequence from the tribute:
Ramona Fradon is a huge inspiration and went to the same art school that changed my life, the Art Students League of New York.
Speaking of that place: I’ve been working for them full-time for almost 10 years now, and I’m proud to say that I’ve been promoted to Co-Director of the Comics & Narrative Arts Program, which I founded 3 years ago and is going strong! It’s part of what’s been keeping me super busy lately. I even got featured on the New York One news for the League’s 150th Anniversary (you can watch the video here.)
I have so much more to share as the last year has been jam-packed with amazing moments, but I’ll save them for another post. I’m busy prepping for San Diego Comic Con next week, where I’ll be tabling with Next Comic Art (Hall F, Booth 4613, if you’re going.) I’ll probably post updates as I go on my Instagram and YouTube channel.
So grateful for all the wonderful things and I’ll do my best to keep a record as I go! Hope you’re well and talk soon! ☀️
